My family gave me a collective eye roll when I mentioned this window well grates project. Before we got our house painted I NEVER paid attention to the window well grates in our backyard. But with new exterior paint and trim our window well grates looked kind of blah.
You can see where this project may have been lower on the to-do list for some members of my family.
The aluminum finish was a little dull and tired and the concrete foundation didn’t add any “pop of color.” This project took about a half and hour so this was not a huge investment of my time.
I used Primer + Paint black flat spray paint for this project. That’s it! I added newspaper (remember those daily deliveries) to the adjacent wall to minimize paint spray on the house. I’m not always the most diligent when it comes to the prep part of the paint. I always say, “That’s why there’s touch up paint.” That’s all I needed.

I didn’t paint the actual window well on the outside because I thought I might fall down the rabbit hole (so to speak) and paint the interior side of the well too. For this window well grate update, I was after a quick fix for a fresh look.
