After my garage cleanup project a few weeks ago I turned my attention to the recycle bin and trash cans. I wanted to distinguish the recycling from the everyday garbage. Most weeks it was difficult to distinguish between the two types. It drove me crazy to find plastic or cardboard in the garbage can. Yes, I know it’s a little over dramatic….
Here was the recycle bin the day before recycle pick up. As you can see the plastic bottles and aluminum cans stacked up quickly. It was not unusual to find cans next to the bin where clearly someone missed their slam dunk into a 40″ tall receptacle.
I chose a neon paint for the recycle bin makeover to make it easier for my family to know exactly where to toss the recyclables. The bright color was hard to ignore and impossible to miss. It also served as a glowing reminder to toss plastic, cardboard, paper and aluminum in the appropriate bin. I added a vinyl sign to catch the attention of the recycling truck (separate from our regular garbage service). I didn’t want all of my weekly recyclable items to end up with the trashy trash.
Could your garbage cans use a little makeover?
