Hey everyone! How many of you have a finished basement that is beginning to show it’s age? One of the reasons we bought our current house was the basement was finished which meant no cash out of pocket to do it ourselves. The basement had a finished bathroom and a functional bar with a mini fridge AND a sink. But, just like it’s owners, the bar began to show it’age.
With a full day of work we were able to update the bar. I love the finished look and we have a second stage we will tackle this summer (it will involve a mini dumpster).
update the bar (or wet bar or butler’s pantry)
And then, around the time the mini fridge’s ice maker broke, the bar looked dated. With heavy, faded maple upper cabinets the bar looked tired. I apologize for bad lighting.. but it kind of reinforces my argument that the bar was in need of an update.
We got an estimate for the refinished cabinet fronts, but that was way more money than we wanted to spend. So, in a weekend we decided to pull out the upper cabinets and update the bar area. It’s scary how easy it is to take out a row of cabinets (it does require two people).
We listed the cabinets online and they were sold in a day to a guy who was finishing a small basement! I admit when the cabinets came down and we were staring at this I was thinking, “Oh man this might be a repeat of our basement bathroom project.
drywall repair & paint
We had to do some serious wall repair. To keep it cheap and easy we patched the wall and finished it with a few coats of chalk paint. I like the chalk wall, but I think we have a basement bar update 2.0 in the works.
We added shelves just like the shelves we added in our kitchen.
We decided to use plumbing parts for the shelving brackets and here is a photo I shared when I used them for window rods. But I prefer the brackets we used for the kitchen shelves a little bit more.
I need to finish staging the shelves. There’s a lot of re-gifted wine on the bar counter that I need to sort. I found a bottle of Mead from World Market that has traveled in a moving van back and forth to Denver over 20 years. I pitched the bottle…
Once I finish staging the shelves I will update the basement with a wide shot. Any suggestions on staging the shelves?
