Chalkboard Obsession Began with Little House on the Prairie

July 10, 2017

My friends tease me about my chalkboard obsession. They like to walk around the main level of my house and count the number of chalkboards. My chalkboard obsession began in my childhood when my sister and I got a freestanding, dual-sided chalkboard from Santa.

We alternated between who played the role of Miss Beadle; the Walnut Grove teacher in Little House on the Prairie. We recruited friends, cousins and our brothers to be our students. And, when our brothers got tired of playing the kid in the back of the “class” we substituted with our Baby Alive dolls.

One of us became an English teacher. And, the other sister talks and types too much. We both have a thing for chalk, Sharpies, colored pencils and markers.

I think it is the contrast of the black chalkboard paint and the wood. Chalkboards provide a defined, temporary space. With a swoosh of an eraser (or paper towel), chalkboards offer a clean slate; a reset button (or chalk).

I suspected I was too obsessed when I made an impulse buy of these chalkboard placemats from Crate & Barrel.

In my defense, I had a gift card that was taking up too much room in my wallet.

I don’t even need to write on every chalkboard. In fact, many of my boards are used as trays. I love the contrast between the blackboard and the Rosemary.

What do you love about chalkboards and how do you decorate or use them around your house?

I do love chalkboards but don’t have nearly as many as you do. I have one in the kitchen that I like to decorate seasonally but right now it’s covered in cards, awards, mementos and invitations (it’s magnetic too).
