Weekending | Homecoming Is a Four Letter Word

October 6, 2018

Did you hear the news? Homecoming is now a four letter word.  Apparently the three syllable, ten letter word was too much to text for the Z-generation.

I remember when homecoming was called… well,  homecoming. The week included “wear your pajamas to school” and “backward day,” assemblies, Friday night football and culminated in the homecoming dance on Saturday night. With three children we have had twelve homecomings.

Our daughter went to her first dance with a friend from another highschool. They remain, friends, today.

Homecoming was a sign that fall had arrived. With photos in front of a backdrop of yellow, orange and red leaf trees.

And, the Colorado mountain range made the perfect backdrop.

Our first Bernese mountain dog rescue, Owen, dressed up for photos too.

And, now? The annual dance is a four-letter word; HOCO. Take a minute to sound it out. It took me a minute or two.

The first time my son used the word HOCO I thought he was swearing.

The Z-generation did not want to be inconvenienced with an additional six letters.

And, as his parents, we embraced the new trend. Just like we embraced the tie trends; from ties to bowties. And, the practical, less awkward trend to wrist corsages.

Last minute dress adjustments to make sure everything stayed in place. This dress had a dozen safety pins in the back!

We are finishing our last Homecoming this season. I mean HOCO. Pass the tissues!

I think an annual trip during October will be a great new fall tradition.

It’s HOCO here in TX too, but it wouldn’t be complete with the garter/mum exchange. If you want to be truly horrified by a TX tradition (non-TX native here, lol!) search for a HOCO mum on pinterest. As in all things TX, bigger is always best when it comes to HOCO mum’s!! I hope he and his date had a good time. 🙂
