~ bathroom remodel started with paint~
The title of this post should be, “Kids the toilet flushes!” This bathroom remodel project started the week of Thanksgiving when I decided it was a slow week and a good time to test out paint colors on our basement bathroom wall. The intention was to JUST change the paint… in January; you know after the holidays. Imagine my hysterics when the tile, adjacent to the wall but covered by a shower curtain, looked PEACH next to the GREIGE paint. Here is the bathroom before: just photos no words:
One week after the paint samples this is what our full basement bathroom looked like this. And, it sat like this most of the winter because of tennis, skiing and football!
We started with the tile in the shower. We found a tile cutter on clearance at Home Depot. It took months to finish this project because life (skiing, travel, football) got in the way!
Once we tackled the shower tile it was on to the floor. I love the new floor! Love it! Love it! We went with a ceramic tile. The subfloor was wood so it required some prep with Simple Set Pre-Mixed Thin Set. Check out the details HERE if you get excited about thin set!
Check it out. I love the wood grain looking ceramic tiles! Seriously, this is ceramic tile! And, now I want it in all our bathrooms. No maintenance. I wish I could put this in my entire house! With 2 large breed dogs, ceramic tile could be life changing!
The next decision was to decide if we could vanity work with the industrial look we were going for in this bathroom. We decided we could upcycle it and relocate it to the garage for storage. This is my favorite project of the bathroom remodel (with the tile floor a close second). Here is the before:
When we ripped out the vanity we had a wall that was trashed. And, with a new light fixture, toilet and vanity we decided this was an opportunity to try a plank floor wall! It was soooo easy! At this stage of the remodel we were so ready for quick project. The plank wall was finished in under 2 hours! We used a nail gun to install and then primed and painted the tongue & groove planks:
We wanted an updated light fixture and were less than inspired by the big box lamp stores. On a whim, I did a quick search for industrial light fixtures on Etsy. Those details are found HERE.
Here is the inspiration for what I wanted in this basement bathroom. I was looking for an industrial look to get as far away from the builder grade stock cabinet installed by the previous owners. I am on an industrial theme in the rest of the basement. Check out my earlier project in the basement HERE
When I saw this project I KNEW! I KNEW my {first} husband and I could do this for 1/10th of the cost and we could make it in the USA! I will post details in a later post, but for purposes of wrapping up this nine month basement bath remodel I just want to show the finished project: here is our Pottery Barn knockoff vanity:
Here is the finished bathroom as of today. We still have a built in cabinet to update, but we have a shower, toilet and sink which is all we need with a house filled with teenagers and their friends!
