Today I am sharing my favorite homemade dog bones recipe. Our dogs, Tanner and Chloe, love these (vegan if you want vegan) dog bones! These dog bones are the chocolate chip cookie, but for dogs and without chocolate. And, the best part of this homemade dog bones recipe is it has only four ingredients. That’s it! This is virtually fail proof and I have shared quite a few fails in the kitchen.
- 2 cups whole wheat flour,
- 2 TBSP baking powder,
- 2 cups chunky peanut butter
- 2 cups skim milk **my dogs are not vegan
- ** adjust milk and peanut butter for vegan version
- The original recipe I found online had multiple typos. I suspect the oven temperature was one of the typos. The original recipe said bake at 200 degrees, but after 40 minutes the dog bones were super smooshy. So after a few random temperature changes I settled on a cookie temperature of 300 and baked for 20 minutes to get a baseline on a correct temperature. Trust me your dog will love these regardless of whether they are over or slightly undercooked! Enjoy
I mixed the four ingredients like any other batter. This one is a small enough recipe a wood spoon is all you need to mix the ingredients. Adjust the type of milk and/or peanut butter for a vegan version. I wonder if you could fill a Kong with the batter and freeze it (minus the baking powder)?
The batter is rolled out just like cookie dough. It’s a little sticky so I sprinkle a little flour on the rolling pin and surface. I keep my batter thick so the bones have more weight when I grab them out of the oven.
I purchased a cute little dog bone cookie cutter HERE. I also found cute, hard to find cookie cutters at an online store called the Cookie Cutter Company.
I love this homemade dog bones recipe. They are easy and would make a fun recipe to get the kids or grandkids involved. With the short ingredient list these would make a fun boredom buster during the summer when the days start inching towards the new school year! Hope your 4 legged family members love these dog bones!
