This picture at the Olympics sums it up for so many of us as parents, athletes and fans of the Olympic games. I love how the spirt of the Olympics sneaks up on me. I follow some of the athletes in the weeks leading to the Olympics, but I always think I am not going to watch it. And, then the gymnastics, fencing, swimming…. or any other event has a way of capturing my interest when I least expect it. This year I was dialed in to rugby, because my son plays rugby so I recognize a few terms and descriptions; “scrum,” “napping,” and “blood sub.” I find myself Googling the names of athletes-getting their backstory. It gets me every time.
The emotion USA swimmer Ryan Held displayed on the podium accepting the gold is genuine and it doesn’t hurt that he is a cute crier. We can all feel the enormity of his win for himself, his teammates and his family. And, as a mother of a recent college graduate I can’t help but ask, “I wonder if he has a girlfriend?” I am going to be banned from my daughter’s social media at any moment, but I can’t stop myself.
