If you had to name the most popular room in your home, what room would it be? In our house, the kitchen is the epicenter of our home and family. Over the weekend, I took a few photos of our kitchen island which means an update is in the planning stages. A few years ago I shared my 37 minute kitchen island update here. And, now it’s time for a new kitchen island update or a puppy. #wink
But, this time as I took a few pics of the island in its current state, I paused to remember the memories created around this rectangular island with a cooktop placed right in the middle of the kitchen prep workspace and granite square tiles for the counter. All but three corners of the island have chipped where a bag of Sonic Ice landed on the edge.
And, I realized so many great and not so great memories happened around our kitchen island. And, as our children graduate, leave for college and experience their first prom, it’s time for a modest (cheap) kitchen island update… or a puppy. #wink
Kitchen Island Memories
In our house, the kitchen island is where we gather to share our days. For me, it’s where I spend so many late nights. It’s my quiet, happy space when the house finally settles down for the night. The kitchen island is where I bake chocolate chip cookies and screw up dinner. It’s where I love to create or organize the kitchen cabinets.
With family and friends, we have laughed, cried and shared our dreams and fears around this tired little island.
It’s where our older son sat at 11:30 pm on a Friday night and found his future college, in a glossy brochure. He didn’t know it that night, but I knew he had found the perfect place for his next chapter.
The island is where my friends and I gather for impromptu Thursday night happy hours. It’s where we sipped wine and dug into warm artichoke dip and maybe laughed a little too loud for a school night.
Right about now, my son would ask, “Maybe a little too loud?#sarcasm #myson
At one point, our island made a temporary wall (cell) to barricade our three-month Berner puppy during her potty training stage.
And, it’s where I took a quick photo of our daughter on her first day of her first (real) job in downtown Denver. #proudmom #momofmathlete
The island was where our youngest son learned how to swallow non-chewable Tylenol; with a glass of water and a stack of mini M&M’s. And, it’s where we most recently worked on his epic prom proposal. I shared a peek on Instagram.
And, those bar stools on one side of the island carried the weight of those memory-filled events. Some of the biggest, scariest and exciting decisions happened around our kitchen island. Just like the way the island anchored our kitchen, it anchored our family too.
Three barstools for three kids.
