Recently I posted our eight month basement bathroom renovation. This complete DIY, no contractor hired, gut job started when I threw up some paint color samples on a Sunday evening… just before Thanksgiving. My original intentions were to paint the bathroom before the holidays. Check out the complete transformation here. Here is the finished bathroom with new shower tile, floors, planked walls and my favorite Pottery Barn knockoff project here. Oh and did I mention new paint?
The builder grade, white sliding closet doors in the bathroom were identical to the ones pictured below. The closet doors below now hide my husband’s mobile office. The sliding closet doors in the basement bathroom were opposite the shower in the photo above. This room has no natural light unless you include the glass blocks for the egress window. I have taken a hundred photos and can’t get rid of the yellow, grainy images.
So we had a set of closet doors like these and when we ripped out the tile floor we tore out the closet doors and shelves. We removed the doors, shelves and trim around the closet doors. We saved the trim for touch up trim where the floor tile removal took out a few pieces.
After a brief discussion we decided on pine for this project. We used 2×10 pine shelves. The more knots the better (picks up the stain in more depth). I used one of my favorite stains I shared over here.
We matched the trim and stain to the bathroom door adjacent to these shelves. The stain matches the DIY Pottery Barn knockoff vanity. I am still messing with the décor on the shelves. I placed bottoms on the lower two shelves for towels etc. This is a bathroom used mostly by our sons teenage friends so it’s a balance between pretty and durable. Notice the crumpled towel one of the boys shoved between the shelves. I didn’t notice it when I took this photo.
I love these diy built-in shelves. I wish the photos did it justice. I have reshot these shelves multiple times and this is the best it’s going to get for now!
