Hi everyone- How is your weekend? I wanted to kickoff the first Sunday in August with my new Back to School Sunday Series for the month of August:
Suggestions related to reluctant readers, delayed readers or children diagnosed with dyslexia. Or, just for kids who would rather do anything BUT READ.
It’s not about the label, it’s about finding the way around the outside of the box!
As some as you know, I have a son who was initially labeled a reluctant reader in kindergarten (many kids get this initial label). However, upon intensive testing, he was diagnosed with mild dyslexia. We were lucky in that we had a teacher that informed us of the red flags. That post is found HERE and is very close to my heart! It still makes me tear up when I read it! So, for the month of August I will post suggestions, our experiences and easy ideas to help your child learn to read! These suggestions work for all kids, but they are based on our experience with our son!
1. Here’s a great resource I found 2 years ago. It’s catered to boys and the author is hilarious! Check out GUYSREAD
2. If you suspect your child or student or grandchild MAY have reading struggles, a book we found enormously helpful is Overcoming Dyslexia by Sally Shaywitz, MD
3. Check out Dan Gutman books. Read my original post about how I attribute my son’s interest in reading to his funny characters and catchy titles! This guy is my favorite celebrity!
I am not a special education educator. I am a parent with a child who was diagnosed with dyslexia. My goal is to help parents, teachers, grandparents spread the word! It’s not about the label, it’s about finding the way around the outside of the box!
